NADFAS Volunteer Activities
From the beginning, NADFAS has been more than a simple lecture society with many members enjoying the chance to give active support to museums, galleries and great gouses and churches in return for the pleasure they gain from the arts. These volunteer activities include Church Recorders and Heritage Volunteers.
Church Recorders
Much of Britain’s heritage is concealed in churches and religious buildings that are slowly being recorded by NADFAS volunteers. Church Recorders make records of the content of churches – memorials, metalwork, woodwork, textiles, windows, etc. While NADFAS volunteers have recorded over 1000 churches, there is still plenty of scope to record the numerous churches and religious buildings in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Several of our GDFAS members take part in Church Recording jointly with members of the Blackheath Decorative and Fine Arts Society. Since Greenwich members joined the Blackheath group, we have worked on three local churches. First, St Stephen's, Lewisham, a Victorian Gothic church by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The record of this church was completed and presented to the church in 2005. Next came the private Chapel of Morden College, Blackheath, a seventeenth century building in the style of Sir Christopher Wren. The recording is practically complete and the record is now being compiled.

We are currently working at St Mary's, Lewisham, originally a mediaeval church but largely rebuilt in the eighteenth century and then again, following a fire, in the nineteenth. There is lots still to do here - new recorders would be most welcome. Enthusiasm and interest are more important than experience, as training is given both while recording and through the many study days organised by NADFAS Church Recorders. If you are interested in getting involved, please get in touch through the Contacts page.
Heritage Volunteers
Heritage Volunteers help to conserve our heritage both in Britain and in parts of Europe.

Conservation and preservation of our heritage are tremendous burdens on the limited resources of museums, National Trust properties, historic houses, libraries and gardens. Volunteers help them in non-specialist but vital ways by caring for collections, recording documents, guiding and stewarding

The Royal College of Physicians is seeking help with the cataloguing of their outstanding collection of paintings, prints, silver and medical instruments relating to the history of the medical profession since the College's foundation in 1518. Volunteers will work in a pleasant environment at the College's Grade 1 listed building on the edge of Regent's Park. Full training will be given.
The Joint Archive Service is looking for volunteers to help number, re-package and undertake a conservation survey of their Freedom Records collection. The collection consists of printed and manuscript paper and parchment material from the mid 1800s to the present day and is generally in good condition. Prior training will be given.
Volunteers are needed to help conserve and create an inventory of historical catalogues of records and gramophones dating from 1897 at the EMI Music Archives at Hayes. The location is close to Hayes BR station on the Paddington/Reading line. Flexible hours although once a week or fortnight preferred. Sandwich lunch and drinks provided. Training given.
Volunteers are required by the Transport for London Historical Archive at St James Park Station, a transport and social archive dating from the early nineteenth century. There are two projects: light conservation work on the archive, or editing the archive catalogue. Hours by arrangement. Lunch in the Staff Restaurant. Training given.
